Treasury in Brazil: payables, receivables, bank files and Pix

SAP’s Brazil localization covers the payment formats that the main Brazilian banks ask for. Here are the banks, the file layouts, the payment methods you will configure, and Pix.

The banks

The main banks and their codes

Every Brazilian bank has a 3-digit code, used in bank files, boletos and transfers. In SAP it goes into the bank key of the house bank and of partners’ bank details.

Bank file layouts SAP supports

Brazilian bank files are flat text files, not XML. SAP handles outgoing files (sent to your bank) and incoming ones (the bank’s return file) in these layouts. Febraban’s CNAB 240 is used by many banks.

CNAB is Febraban’s standard (Centro Nacional de Automação Bancária); 240 and 400 are the line lengths. Each bank still has its own variant, so get its manual.

Getting paid · receivables

Duplicata and boleto

The two most common ways to collect from customers in Brazil. Both start in the SAP payment run and end with the bank’s return file updating your open items.

Duplicata

The payment run creates one duplicata per open item. It “duplicates” what your customer already received on the invoice and works as a trade bill. You send the duplicatas to your bank in a file (or, on paper, as a list called a borderô) and the bank collects.

Boleto

Like the duplicata, except the company (or the bank) prints the payment slip itself, with a bar code the customer pays anywhere. Printing your own saves the bank’s fee and gets you paid faster. The duplicata file still goes to the bank and the process is the same.

Instant payments

Pix, the payment method Brazil switched to

Pix is the Central Bank’s instant payment system, launched in November 2020. Money moves between accounts in seconds, 24 hours a day, every day, with no intermediary. You can pay bills and purchases or make transfers, as an alternative to boleto, TED and cards.

Pix is free for individuals; companies may pay fees agreed with their bank. The name is not an acronym: it is a brand that hints at technology, pixels and transactions.

In a bank app, Pix sits next to the other options. A Pix key works like an alias for a bank account: it links the customer to the institution, branch, account number and account type, so the payer only needs the key or the QR code.

Ways to pay with Pix

  • QR code, static or dynamic
  • Key: CPF or CNPJ
  • Key: e-mail
  • Key: phone number
  • Key: random key
  • Bank details typed by hand (not a key)
Limits

The system sets no cap; each bank sets limits. For individuals, the default at night (20:00 to 06:00) is R$ 1,000 per payment.

Keep the supplier’s Pix key with its bank details, and agree with the treasury team how Pix receipts are matched to open items.
